Manchester United slipped to a narrow 1-0 defeat against Arsenal at Old Trafford, as an early goalkeeping error proved costly in their Premier League opener.
The decisive moment came after just 13 minutes. With first-choice goalkeeper André Onana sidelined through injury, United boss Ruben Amorim handed Altay Bayindir his debut. The Turkish international, however, struggled under pressure, misjudging a dangerous Declan Rice corner. His weak punch diverted the ball straight into the path of Riccardo Calafiori, who bundled home from close range to give Arsenal the lead.
Despite the early setback, United responded positively and looked a far more better side than last season. Summer signings Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo were both lively on debut, testing Arsenal’s David Raya on multiple occasions. The Spanish goalkeeper was in outstanding form, producing a string of saves – including a fingertip stop to deny Cunha’s close range effort – that ultimately secured the points for Mikel Arteta’s men.
Arsenal, meanwhile, were far from their fluent best. Beyond Calafiori’s opener, they created few clear chances and failed to register a shot on target after the break. Rice went close with a late free-kick, but otherwise the visitors were content to sit deep and absorb United’s pressure.
For Amorim, the performance provided encouragement but also frustration. United dominated possession and carved out more opportunities than their opponents, yet their lack of clinical finishing – combined with Bayindir’s early mistake proved decisive.
Arsenal, though far from convincing, will not mind. This hard-fought win marks their fifth victory in six league meetings with United and gives them the perfect start to their campaign, while the hosts are left to rue what might have been.
