Manchester City reignited their Premier League campaign with a commanding 3-0 victory over rivals Manchester United at the Etihad Stadium. Phil Foden set the tone with a first-half header before Erling Haaland struck twice after the break to underline City’s dominance in the Manchester derby.
Foden, making his first start of the season, showcased the sharpness he has been working towards during the international break. The midfielder ghosted into the box on 18 minutes to meet Jeremy Doku’s cross, giving City the lead in front of an ecstatic home crowd. Doku, a constant menace on the left, was again at the heart of the second goal, slipping a clever pass through for Haaland to dink a cool finish beyond Luke Shaw and goalkeeper Altay Bayindir.
Haaland, who had earlier spurned a simple chance, made amends midway through the second half. Released by Bernardo Silva, the Norwegian surged clear from the halfway line and buried a ruthless strike past Bayindir to seal the result.
City debutant Gianluigi Donnarumma also made his mark, producing a superb save to deny Bryan Mbeumo’s volley, but United’s lack of cutting edge in attack ensured the hosts’ clean sheet remained intact.
The win lifts Pep Guardiola’s side to eighth in the table, easing concerns after back-to-back defeats before the international break. For United, however, the result compounds a poor start to the season, leaving them languishing in 14th place with just one victory to their name.
