Tomas Soucek and Jarrod Bowen were on the scoresheet as West Ham completed a league double over Manchester United for the first time since 2007. The result also saw Graham Potter’s side leapfrog the Red Devils in the league standings, with Ruben Amorim’s men now a lowly 16th in the table.
United came into this game having beaten Athletic Bilbao 4-1 in the Europa League semi-finals, but with nothing realistically left to play for in the league, were second best to the visiting Hammers. Mohammed Kudus created West Ham’s opening goal following good play from former Manchester United defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka. Tomas Soucek finished the move with a clever backheel, giving the visitors a 1-0 lead.
West Ham’s second goal came after United midfielder Manuel Ugarte was robbed off possession in midfield, with Mohammed Kudus once again causing problems. The ball eventually reached Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who set up Jarrod Bowen for a composed finish to double the lead to 2-0.
United created several opportunities, the best falling to Rasmus Højlund. However, the Danish striker has struggled to replicate the form he showed in Serie A. He came closest with a close range strike that seemed certain to find the net, only for West Ham goalkeeper Alphonse Areola to produce a brilliant save and keep him out.
The Red Devils will now face Chelsea in the next round of fixtures while West Ham will take on CL hopefuls Nottm Forest.
