France were knocked out of the Women’s Euros by Germany for the second consecutive Championships running as Les Bleues fluffed their lines in the penalty shootout in Basel. German keeper Ann-Katrin Berger made fine saves to deny both Amel Majri and Alice Sombath and then scored from the spot herself as they won 6-5 in the shootout.
Germany were reduced to ten early in the game when central defender Kathrin Hendrich was sent off for hair-pulling in the box. The resultant French penalty was converted by Grace Geyoro.
Germany hit back immediately, with Chelsea’s Sjoeke Nusken nodding home from a corner on 25 minutes. Despite their dominance, France had very little to show for it, and the Germans could’ve won it in regular time if Nusken hadn’t missed a second half penalty.
Berger also made an incredible save to stop a possible own goal from Janina Minge, and the game eventually went to penalties. Dabritz was the only German player to miss her penalty, but Nusken crucially converted her sudden death spot kick to send her side through.
The Germans had beaten France in the Euro 2022 knockouts as well. They will now face Spain in the last four in Zurich.
