Paris Saint-Germain staged a dramatic late comeback to stun Tottenham and lift the UEFA Super Cup with a 4-3 penalty shootout victory, spoiling Thomas Frank’s debut as Spurs manager.
Tottenham appeared in full control after Micky van de Ven pounced on a rebound to open the scoring just before half-time, and Cristian Romero doubled the lead early in the second half with a powerful header. PSG goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier, tipped to be their first choice this season, was unable to keep either effort out.
Despite having only returned to training a week earlier following their Club World Cup final loss in July, PSG found another gear late on. Lee Kang-in halved the deficit with a superb 20-yard strike, and substitute Gonçalo Ramos headed home in the 94th minute to force penalties.
The shootout began nervously, with Vitinha missing for PSG and Van de Ven failing to convert for Spurs. Mathys Tel also squandered his chance for Tottenham, leaving Nuno Mendes to hold his nerve and bury the winning spot-kick.
The loss denied Tottenham the chance to claim a second European trophy in three months after their Europa League triumph in May. Frank, however, remained upbeat, praising his side’s organisation, set-piece threat, and ability to challenge “one of the best teams in the world” for much of the contest. For PSG, the victory marks a bold start to their new season and a reminder of their never-say-die mentality.
